Hamilton Academical plan to sign 26-year-old goalkeeper Alan Martin from Clyde, with Bully Wee manager Barry Ferguson lining up Greenock Morton's Grant Adam as a replacement. (Daily Record, print edition)

Is this for Mcgovern, Hill or Currie? or just newspaper nonsense

A better signing would be Albion Rovers' Neil Parry. Martin has played for the U21s but lost his way for a while, going non league down south and then Clyde. Parry is a very commanding keeper, about 6ft 4 and was Rovers player of the year. Seen him live about 8 or 9 times and never seen him make a mistake.

Had heard this was happening, Clyde apparently matched our wage offer as they are throwing big money at promotion next year but hardly a choice between SPL and league 2. Have heard Currie is leaving with a couple of lower league clubs interested.

Wouldn't expect any "marquee" signings from the Les and Ronnie show in close season.
More a £29.99 gazebo from HOME BARGAINS if the last transfer window was anything to go by.
Nevertheless wouldn't want to jeopardize the long term stability of the club by splashing the cash would we?
That's just not ethosistically possible.(is there such a word)
Best just to stick to our guns and not be particularly ambitious after all we are the smallest club with the smallest fanbase(yawn) not to mention the smallest mindset.

Top class? Free transfers are the vast majority of transfers these days; offers like double our wage structure might be a factor. More than double our crowd might be a factor as well.

What we take in from transfers negates any advantage other clubs have with bigger crowds. We need to show more ambition than signing guys from mid table Championship clubs and Third Division players who, with respect should merely be squad players-unless exceptional.

The likes of Hemmings would have been the type of signing we needed and bidding for the likes of big Osman from Thistle. As it is,any signings since Alex Neil left have been "underwhelming" to say the least.

It wouldn't surprise me if we end up with a situation where Dundee sign Hemmings while we get Clarkson.

Time to show some ambition and get a couple of good signings in to get the support looking forward to next season and sell some season tickets.

What we take in on transfer fees is as a result of the whole set up which has been successful on the park and in the bank. Deviating wildly in expensive 3 year contracts and then lifting the whole wage structure of the club would be a major departure. In terms of mid table Championship can I mention No.22 and Jesus ? and Lucas looks useful. It is also never factored in how much it costs to actually run our youth system - people just see the transfer fees and thinks its all 100% profit to spend on tranfers

That said, the club has pushed money for certain signings, like MAC and Scotland and we do need to do it for a certain player which for me would be a striker. So I agree with you but we need to take care. Also cash and ambition doesn't guarantee success, as Dundee have proved off and on the park twice.

Dundee may be getting all the players as they got extra £££ from top six! But we are happy that we got two wins. Also £300k on more pitch is not in my eyes the best uses of money if we have to replace every two years.

I don't think we will get a striker as good as clarkston. which is depressing as he is not that good.

Be fair, 2 wins ! That's infinitely more wins than you said we would get.

How much more do Dundee get from 6th than we get for 7th (if we make it)?

About £90K according to this table which I published on another thread some time back. It can certainly help in the purchase/wages of one player for the 'Dee.

Position % due Paid August 2014 Paid December 2014 Paid April 2015 Balance due - August 2015
1 13.4 £600,000 £75,000 £300,000 £1,437,000
2 9.6 £600,000 £75,000 £300,000 £753,000
3 8.25 £600,000 £75,000 £300,000 £510,000
4 7.25 £600,000 £75,000 £300,000 £330,000
5 6.75 £600,000 £75,000 £300,000 £240,000
6 6.25 £600,000 £75,000 £300,000 £150,000
7 5.75 £600,000 £75,000 £25,000 £335,000
8 5.5 £600,000 £75,000 £25,000 £290,000
9 5.25 £600,000 £75,000 £25,000 £245,000
10 5 £600,000 £75,000 £25,000 £200,000
11 4.75 £600,000 £75,000 £25,000 £155,000
12 4.5 £600,000 £75,000 £25,000 £110,00

So are people keen for us to spend the kind of money that teams like Motherwell and Hibs have 'invested' in wages during recent seasons?
And get an experienced manager.......................................that teams like Motherwell and Hibs have had in recent seasons?

No guarantees.

And accusations of lack of investment could have equally been made last August.

We had goals in our team last year and the squad was boyant with confidence.

All of this has been ripped out the club!

I don't think the squad is that far away from being good.

Goals bread confidence and we need to invest in a 15+ striker and we should do well. We had this in #22 and Mac. We don't have this just now, players from Dumbarton is not a problem if we have goals in the team which will provide confidence and needed points next year.

One or two players on a higher wage to return the above is a good investment as Goals also make fans happy, happy fans turn up and spend ££

I agree that the striking position is the absolute priority and in the past that is where we have spent money on guys like Scotland, MAC, Casalinuovo. However, any established 15+ striker will have clubs like Aberdeen, Dundee Utd, Hearts etc going for him and in the end might not give you anything like 15 goals. The board will have a budget that they may stretch for the right person but we are looking for maybe guys who have previously scored far less in the hope we can mould them into better if they fit our system - perhaps like MAC or Andreu.

3 year contracts on double wages might still be beyond us; and if Hartlley left Dundee and they have a bad season, they might even be beyond Dundee.

Here is another example of a small(ish) club who had achieved good things last year; investing to get up the table under an experienced manager:
