Alex Neil & Martin Canning

Big win for the two of them today, with Sunderland winning the League 1 playoff final at Wembley. Canning is the assistant manager there, and has apparently worked wonders with Sunderland's defence this season.

Neil seems to have a knack for winning these playoff finals. He has also won the English Championship playoff final with Norwich and, of course, the Championship final with the mighty Accies.

Nice to see managers that gave us some of our better memories doing good things.

From a Sunderland fans forum

A bit like players that sometimes don’t work out for whatever reason some managers just don’t fit with the club but in Alex Neil we have a real gem.

What a difference it makes having a proper, experienced, capable tactician in charge who organises the players and prepares for games so meticulously that players are left in absolutely no doubt what their individual jobs are.

Seem to remember us with about 40 points by Christmas under Alex, and renewing my passport in the anticipation of European Football the following season.

It doesnt always work out though, and unless he has money to spend, the English Championship is a tougher nut to crack. However with a truly massive core support from Sunderland's 40000 fans, there's income aplenty, on paper at least.

Wonder what his win bonus was
