As expected after strong rumours over the last few days Alex has been appointed Sunderland Head Coach on a one year rolling contract and he is joined by none other than Martin Canning as his
assistant :o

Good appointment for Alex and Sunderland, but dear lord why did he have to take Canning with him. Is he trying to ruin his reputation. Dont think Canning has been involved at a decent level since leaving Accies, 3 years ago

Sunderland have amongst the worst reputations in England, 12 managers in 10 years, almost as bad as West Brom or Watford.Unless they get promoted this year think they will bin him as early as May

I doubt they'll bin him in May if they fail to go up. Lee Johnson left with three straight defeats and just before that they drew with ten man Accrington, who equalised with ten and lost at home to Lincoln. Any failure will surely be on Johnson. I thought Neil was very harshly treated at Preston ( and Frankie too) as they are punching above their weight in that league. Canning kept us up for three years. I wasn't his biggest fan but he surely deserves some credit for that. Hopefully they can keep them in the play off positions, automatic has already gone realistically.

This is a Sunderland write up on Martin Canning. I like Ronnie MacDonalds’ write up. ;)

Good luck to Martin and Alex at Sunderland.
Canning was a top player for us and for the most part managed the Club well enough, kept us up and brought through Docherty and Ferguson amongst others. The board’s remit was stay up and introduce youth, not ever take it to the next level like St Johnstone or Livi, and he fulfilled that and was effectively hampered by the board’s lack of further ambition.
Winning at Ibrox was his finest moment, Annan was a shocker but his replacement duplicated both results and that sort of sums up everything about Accies.

Can’t see the attraction of Stoke compared to Sunderland. Currently Sunderland are sitting in a play off place following promotion. Maybe he’s looking to enhance his contract with Sunderland? After a first season with Preston, West Brom came calling but he rejected the move in favour of a very improved contract with Preston.

Seems he's happy to talk to Stoke. Mental! Something can't be right at that club.

I would have thougt that Sunderland was a bigger club than Stoke. Huge home attendances 35000 + each week to Stoke's around 20000

Doubling his wages to £1.5 M a year. Easy decision to make.

From the Telegraph

Sunderland players were told about Neil's departure by sporting director Kristjaan Speakman in a team meeting after training. Many are understood to be devastated by his departure, with some having since spoken to him on the phone.

It is understood that Neil's relationship with Sunderland's owners was part of his decision to leave. Neil was on a one-year rolling contract and was not offered contract terms that he wanted to sign. His departure could now leave Sunderland vulnerable to approaches for players such as Ross Stewart and Alex Pritchard, who are in the final year of their contracts with options to extend.

Money talks Presumably Stoke are offering a long term contract and more money.

Sunderland fans very unimpressed by Sir Alex attending the Stoke match yesterday afternoon while he’s still technically Sunderland manager

The disgusting twat should be sanctioned by the EFL (appreciate that’s unlikely). He’s brought the whole game and the integrity of the league into disrepute. A hideous human being.

And that’s only one of many similar ones
